Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, has been appointed as the new Schalke coach, after the German club fired Jens Keller.

Keller?s position was hanging by a thread, following a dismal start to the 2014/2015 Bundesliga season. Last week, the 43-year-old recorded a disappointing home draw with Maribor and was beaten at Hoffenheim on Saturday.

He met with Schalke?s sporting director Horst Heldt on Monday and was subsequently relieved of his position.

?Schalke have parted company with Jens Keller,? read a brief statement on the club?s official Twitter feed. ?Roberto Di Matteo takes over.?

Keller succeeded Huub Stevens at the club and signed a two-year extension in 2013, but has paid the price for a win that has seen Schalke win twice in 10 games.

On his part, Matteo won the 2012 Champions League with Chelsea, but has been without a job since November 2012.
