Subscribers reject planned NLC shutdown over telecoms tariff hike in Nigeria

The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers has rejected the shutdown and boycott of telecom service proposal by the Nigeria Labour Congress in protest of the recent 50 percent telecom service tariff hike.

NATCOMS National President Adeolu Ogunbanjo made this position known on Thursday, reacting to NLC’s call to boycott telecom services.

According to him, the right way to address dissatisfaction is through the court, not industrial action.


“Going to court is the civil way of doing things, not boycotting telecom services.

“We are not backing the NLC at all. It will send wrong signals to investors. These are private businesses, and President Bola Tinubu is trying hard to woo investors. So we can’t support that rascality,” he said.

Recall that on Wednesday, NLC president Joe Ajaero, while rejecting the 50 percent telecoms hike, called for a nationwide boycott of telecoms services to force the Nigerian government to reverse the hike.

This comes as the leader of Nigerian workers decried that the latest telecoms hike would further impoverish citizens.
