Why Everyday Athletes Are Testing Their Sweat (and Why It's MostlyPointless)

TrainingPeaks—the training-log app plenty of serious runners, cyclists, and triathletes live in—recently rolled out a direct integration with hDrop, a reusable wearable sweat sensor. The idea is that athletes wear it on their arm, and sweat loss and sodium loss data get logged alongside their workout notes, right next to heart rate and power. The integration lets hDrop users sync hydration metrics like sweat loss, sodium loss, and hydration behavior directly into TrainingPeaks, becoming part of the same decision-making metrics as heart rate or pace.

At charging $249.99 for its wearable hydration sensor, hDrop isn't alone. Two other big names in wearable sweat sensors are Nix (around $189) and FlowBio (around $340). On the budget end, Gatorade sells single-use sweat tests for around $25. The goal of all these sweat testing wearables is to tell you exactly how much fluid and sodium you're losing on a run or ride.

As a marathon runner myself, it's easy to see the appeal of these products. After all, in an actual lab, sweat testing can be used to guide personalized fluid and electrolyte replacement recommendations for serious athletes. These consumer sweat sensors are chasing the same promise, just without the lab settings. Unfortunately, as multiple studies have pointed out, it's tough to achieve lab-level accuracy out in the field. Let's take a look at why you most likely do not need to waste your time and money on another wearable just for sweat.

How accurate are sweat testing wearables?

Researchers note that most sweat-sensing devices haven't been rigorously tested in the messy, high-heat, high-humidity conditions athletes actually train in, and that few devices have accuracy data from large field studies rather than controlled labs. A 2026 study testing sweat sodium composition and sweat loss estimation through wearable sensors concluded that measurements from these consumer devices "should currently be interpreted with caution and not considered equivalent to laboratory-grade analyses."

For our purposes here, as a curious runner or cyclist, the major hurdle for consumer-level sweat tests is that your sweat is a moving target. Your sweat sodium concentration changes from one day to the next with heat acclimation, fitness, and diet. You also have to consider the one small patch of skin being sampled. A patch on your forearm or upper arm doesn't factor in the sweat coming off your back, scalp, or torso, all of which behave differently. Trying to extrapolate one patch's reading into a whole-body sweat or sodium loss number introduces a lot of room for error.

Even hDrop, Nix, and FlowBio—which all claim to be the most accurate sweat sensors on the market—have to include in their troubleshooting guidance that poor skin contact produces bad readings, as does interference from water or any other fluid but sweat. Ultimately, these devices are sensitive to moisture, temperature, and positioning—in other words, all obstacles sure to come up during the exact sweaty workout you'd want to be testing in the first place.

What this means for you

Don't get me wrong—I'm all for proper sweat testing if the opportunity to get into a lab comes up. In the meantime, I'd opt for free, generic hydration tracking over a new wearable. Even if it's not lab-perfect, tracking your hydration can still surface useful patterns. Maybe you sweat noticeably more in humidity, or you're consistently a "salty sweater," or your losses spike late in long efforts. Logging all of that in an app like TrainingPeaks can help you spot patterns and adjust your hydration and fueling strategy from there.

But the leap people make—from "my patch says I lost 900mg of sodium" to treating that as an actionable, precise number the way you'd treat heart rate or pace—isn't supported by the current accuracy of consumer sweat tech. These devices are not yet a substitute for a real lab sweat test. If you're interested in finding out for yourself, go crazy. Personally, I'd rather save the money on hydration testing and instead spend it on the hydration and fueling itself.
