Italy in Limbo as Ranieri Rejected Coaching Job

The Italian national team’s World Cup qualification hopes could be under serious threat again as they’re still in search of a new boss. Following Luciano Spaletti’s dismissal, Gli Azzurri were targeting Claudio Ranieri, but the current AS Roma advisor has now rejected that proposal.

Ranieri Rejected Italy Head Coach Job

Gli Azzurri’s World Cup 2026 qualification started in the worst possible fashion as they stumbled into a 3-0 defeat against Norway. That disappointing loss resulted in the decision to part ways with Luciano Spalletti, who coached Italy for the last time during their 2-0 win over Moldova on Monday.

The Italian Football Federation’s plan initially was to appoint Claudio Ranieri, despite the veteran already taking the advisor role at Roma. FIGC didn’t mind Ranieri’s status and will allow him to keep that position with the Giallorossi.

However, the latest reports from Italian media (via Fabrizio Romano) stated that the former Leicester City manager has rejected Italy’s offer.

“It’s a great honor for me to receive that proposal, but I decided to continue my role at AS Roma as part of the management,” Ranieri said.

According to Football Italia, the 73-year-old is most likely not convinced that he can handle doing both roles at the same time. Knowing the big responsibility and pressure the Italian national team coach has, Ranieri seems to be making a reasonable decision.

Following Ranieri’s rejection, FIGC will be hunting for other candidates, with former AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli being one of the candidates.
