A medical doctor based in Netherland has sparked a debate on social media over claims that the Nigerian government has increased the fee to denounce Nigerian nationality from N50, 000 to N5 million. In a viral video, the doctor who is Cameroonian, saidIf you are a Nigerian living in Netherlands and those who have naturalized in Netherlands, I have a question. So I just found out from somebody who reached out to me that Nigeria, sometime in May 2025, I could be wrong, changed the price of denouncing your nationality, renunciationso for those who are in the Netherlands and have to get their Dutch nationality through naturalization, you have to denounce your old nationality because the Netherlands doesn't allow dual nationality unless your country of origin does not allow you give up your nationality. So because of this, you have to renounce your old nationality, something you have to actively do. Netherland says if you get the Dutch nationality, you have to actively denounce your old nationality through official channels. That previously costs N50, 000 set by the Nigerian government which is about 31and apparently from last year, it was changed from N50, 000 to N5 million to denounce your nationality.So my Nigerians, are you actually paying this money or it just formality? So that will mean you pay one thousand euros to get the Dutch nationality and then three thousand Two hundred euros to denounce your Nigerian nationality. This can't be real? You can't make this up. My Nigerians, are you guys truly paying this much to denounce your nationality?'' he saidSome Nigerians in his comment section claimed they indeed paid that much to denounce their Nigerian Nationality.
