Heavy rain has caused the deaths of 14 people in southern China, with 10 others still missing and some 26,000 residents being evacuated because of the downpours, CCTV reported on Tuesday. Rainstorms deluged areas including Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces as well as Chongqing municipality in the past week.
According to reports, some 3,100 houses have collapsed and nearly 840 sq km of crops destroyed. The direct economic loss is estimated at $240 million. Hundreds were trapped in a tunnel submerged by a flood in Chongqing on Tuesday after heavy rainfall, People's Daily said.
