The Egyptian Islamist politician Mohamed Morsi has been sentenced to life in prison following an espionage trial, AFP reported Saturday. Morsi, who served as Egypt's president between 2012 and 2013, received life imprisonment for leading an unlawful organization, his lawyer Abdel Moneim Abdel Maksoud told AFP, adding that his defendant was also given another 15-year jail term and convicted of having "stolen secret documents concerning state security." The ex-president has been acquitted of charges of having supplied Qatar with classified documents. In a number of separate trials, Morsi has previously been sentenced to death, and received another life sentence and a 20-year jail term. In the latest espionage trial, the Egyptian court also handed death penalties to Morsi's six co-defendants, including to three journalists. All verdicts can be appealed.
