Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, yesterday, killed several persons and burnt about 540 houses in Kubi and Watu villages of Michika Local Government in Adamawa State.

According to residents of Watu, several people were killed in the attack when the gunmen invaded the village and started firing sporadically, and detonated explosives leading to the destruction of many houses.

A resident, who gave his name as Zira, said the insurgents stormed the area in the early hours of Monday while most villagers were still asleep.

He said most of the residents were trapped in their homes as the insurgents started shooting and putting off explosives which led to the destruction of many houses including lives.

He said, ?The insurgents took complete control of our village as security operatives were nowhere to be found, which made the case even more pathetic as the insurgents continued to kill and destroy properties with reckless abandon.?

Another resident of the area, Mallam Abu, said he escaped death by the whiskers and ran into the nearby bush where he was hiding, adding that his escape was rather miraculous as he was awake when the insurgents staged their attack.

Abu said, ?Since the insurgents struck, I could not see any of my relatives with whom we are staying, and I am afraid they might have been killed.

?They burnt our houses and some of our children, women and old men were trapped in the inferno that is still burning more properties, because there was nobody to put off the fire. I don?t know why they are so mercilessly killing anybody they come across this time.

?Since the complete take-over of Michika and Madagali by the insurgents on September 7, there are no more soldiers guarding the towns. The only thing now is that jet fighters come from Yola to drop bombs and go back. Our people are in a complete state of helplessness. Government seems not to be coming to our aids as the insurgents control everything in our local government?, he added.
