Authorities in Ghana say at least 53 people died in a collision between a bus and a truck on a highway north of the capital, Accra, Wednesday night.

Ghana's President John Mahama tweeted a condolence message early Thursday, adding that emergency officials were working to rescue people from the site of the crash at Kintampo. in the Brong Ahafo region.

Received the sad news of an accident involving a M.M.T. Bus on the Kintampo- Tamale road. Condolences to those who've lost loved ones.

It is believed to be one of Ghana's worst road accidents in years.

A passenger bus carrying 42 people was reported to have collided head-on with a vehicle headed in the opposite direction, causing a multiple-car collision. Some 23 people were reported injured in the crash.
