The one month old strike embarked by the members of Joint Health Staff Unions (JOHESU) may have failed to achieve its aim of paralyzing public hospitals following strenuous efforts by medical doctors to keep the health institutions functioning to the relief of patients.

At the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, the Accident/Emergency unit was a bubbling with activities as doctors were busy attending to the patients while the striking nurses, pharmacists and laboratory scientists were substituted with contract staffers.

Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Umuahia zone, Dr Ezekiel Ojimadu told journalists Thursday that the strike by health workers was ?uncalled for and mischievous? given that their demands are hinged on frivolities.

He said that NMA was encouraging its members whenever they are to keep the hospitals running as ?we are not on strike and we have to maintain full scale service? to ensure that patients there was no reason patients should not be given adequate attention.
