iOS 11.3.1 to Fix Bricked iPhone 8 Devices - Apple Confirms

Apple released today the first minor update to the iOS 11.3 operating system for all supported devices to fix critical security issues and fix bricked iPhone 8 devices with aftermarket screens.

The iOS 11.3.1 software update is now available for all supported iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to improve the security of your devices and addresses an issue where touch input became unresponsive on some iPhone 8 models whose displays were changed with aftermarket parts by independent service centers.

Apple notes the fact that non-genuine replacement displays may have compromised the visual quality of the device and would fail to work correctly. Therefore, the company reminds users that they should replace their screens only at Apple-certified repair shops and trusted experts who use genuine Apple parts.

The iOS 11.3.1 update also fixes a memory corruption issue in the Crash Reporter that could allow an application to gain elevated privileges, a spoofing issue in the handling of URLs that could lead to UI spoofing when maliciously crafted text messages were processed, and two WebKit memory corruption issues that may lead to arbitrary code execution.

Security Update 2018-001 now available for macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 users
Apple also released today the Security Update 2018-001 patch for macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 users, addressing the same memory corruption issue in the Crash Reporter component that was fixed in iOS 11.3.1, which could allow a maliciously crafted application to gain elevated privileges, and the spoofing issue in the handling of URLs.

Apple recommends all users to install the new iOS 11.3.1 and Security Update 2018-001 software updates on their devices as soon as possible as they improve the overall security and compatibility of the operating systems. For more details on the security vulnerabilities addressed, check out the official support website.
