The next Oura Ring might control your lights

 

The Oura Ring 5 only just launched, but thoughts already turn to the next generation and new information suggests that it could control your lights and blinds.

We’ve already declared the Ring 5 as the best smart ring you can buy, but there’s always room for improvement. Now, it seems that Oura is investigating how tracking the light conditions around you might be a big benefit.

A patent application spotted by Gadgets and Wearables shows that Oura could introduce this feature in a future model. The listing from 16 July is titled “Techniques for evaluating ambient light exposure and chronotype via wearable devices,�

It details how the wearable could keep track of the light conditions around you, including the timing, intensity, duration and colour of the light, including ultraviolet (UV).

The device and accompanying app would then analyse the data along with your sleep patterns and recovery to help you primarily get better sleep.

The cool part is that your Oura Ring could automatically control your smart home, such as dimming the lights and closing blinds or curtains as you get closer to bedtime. It could also automatically open them in the morning to help you get up.

Some could be suggestions for you to action (likely if you don’t have smart blinds or similar) and you might also be able to set rules so the system could turn lights off if you happen to fall asleep with them on.

The patent also suggests that light exposure would be incorporated into the Oura scores and holistic view of your well-being.

How will it do this?

A future Oura Ring might not even need new hardware to achieve this new feature set, as the patent explains the existing LEDs to measure environmental light, though a dedicated light sensor is also mentioned.

The RingConn Gen 2 already does something similar, so it’s certainly possible.

Presumably, a light sensor would work more accurately – as it does on your phone to automatically adjust the screen brightness – as a snug fit may not give the sensors on the inside of the ring very good data.

Adding a light sensor could look unsightly on the ring’s design, though.

Whether this ends up being part of the Oura Ring 6 or not is a big question mark. After all, plenty of patents are filed and never used, but it certainly sounds interesting and plausible, so stay tuned.
