Samsung’s own messaging app closes in July

Samsung has announced that it will be shutting down its own messaging app, Samsung Messages. The announcement was published on the company’s website.

The app will be phased out completely over summer, although only the month of deletion has been announced. According to Samsung: “The Samsung Messages application will be discontinued in July 2026.”

According to Samsung, users will receive further information directly within the app as the shutdown approaches: “Depending on the operating system, you may receive an in-app notification from Samsung Messages to help guide you through the process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the switch.”

In light of this change, Samsung has advised users to switch to Google Messages as their default app for text messages and chats. The switch brings, among other things, support for higher-resolution images, improved group chats and new AI features via Google’s Gemini.

The shutdown isn’t a surprise. Last year, the company announced that it was sunsetting the app. It began the transition by pre-installing Google Messages on newer Galaxy models such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6, the Galaxy Z Flip 6, and the Galaxy S25 and S26 series.

According to� Caschys Blog, Android devices with Android 11 or older won’t be affected. Samsung Messages will continue to work on them.
