Unknown gunmen on Thursday launched an attack on a police checkpoint along the Abakaliki-Enugu expressway, setting a police patrol van ablaze.

The incident occurred at the Ishieke Junction on the outskirts of Abakaliki metropolis.

According to sources in the area, the gunmen killed one policeman and abducted another during the attack. However, these details could not be verified at the time of reporting.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the attack, although he stated that the specifics of the incident were still unclear.

He said, “An incident happened this morning, but I am still trying to get the details.

“At this point, I can’t confirm much. Let me get my facts right.

“I just got information that there was an attack at that checkpoint, but I don’t have any other information.”
