Two suspected transborder car thieves arrested by the Police in Katsina State, on Tuesday, confessed to have stolen no fewer than nine cars from some states in Northwest Nigeria.

The criminals confessed to have in time past sold seven out of the nine stolen cars.

They were on their way to deliver two other recently stolen cars from Kano to a buyer in Niger Republic when they ran out of luck, and were arrested by the police at a mechanic workshop in Katsina.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Superintendent of Police, SP. Isah Gambo, on behalf of the Police Commissioner in the state, CP. Sanusi Buba paraded the suspects at the command’s headquarters on Tuesday, before newsmen.

The two suspects identified as Usman Sani 55, of Rijiyar Lemo Quarters, Kano State and Lukman Magaji 20, of Hotoro Quarters, Kano state, who were in possession of a light blue Toyota Camry, with registration number JJJ 340 EF and an ash colour, Honda CRV with registration number DKA 980 AH when they were arrested in Katsina, said they have been involved in transborder car theft for the past three years.

The 55-year-old suspect, Usman Sani, from Rijiyan Lemu in Kano State said: “I used to be a driver before venturing into stealing cars. I have been involved in car theft for the past three years now.

“So far, in our syndicate, we have stolen nine cars of which we have sold seven successfully. We were on our way to deliver two other stolen vehicles from Kano, a Honda CRV and a Toyota Camry, to a buyer in Niger Repblic, when we were arrested by the police at a mechanic workshop, where we stopped to work on the car. We sold the Honda CRV at N300,000 and the Toyota Camry at N250,000.”

Other items recovered from the suspect on the course of police investigation include: a master key, two knives, bunch of different motor vehicles keys, three (3) pliers, two screw drivers, one hammer, one hacksaw, and a bag containing electrical repairs tools.
