There is no Galaxy Watch 9 Classic

 

Samsung unveiled a horde of new devices at its Galaxy Unpacked event in London, including the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 8 in its new wide format, but one device was missing.

The Galaxy Watch 9 series launched as expected, but rumours of a possible Classic model – the one with the rotating bezel – turned out to be bogus. This is confusing given some leaked information, yet also makes sense given Samsung’s track record. Let’s, erm, unpack it.

As of the Galaxy Watch 7 series, Samsung confirmed to Tech Advisor that the Classic model was on a two-year cycle and the Pro was replaced by the Watch Ultra.

This meant it was no surprise when the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic arrived last year, and we’ve had no expectation of a follow-up in 2026.

That was until late May when mention of ‘wise9’ was spotted in the Wear OS app, with ‘wise’ being the codename for the Classic model, and ‘fresh’ for the regular Samsung smartwatch, which was seen alongside it.

It was then thought that Samsung might be changing things up and updating the Classic model every year, perhaps because of strong sales. However, leaks closer to Unpacked, including comprehensive ones from the likes of Evan Blass, showed no sign of the Galaxy Watch 9 Classic.

Now Unpacked has arrived, we know that the device doesn’t exist and we’ll likely have to wait for the Galaxy Watch 10 in 2027 to get another rotating bezel model.

We reached out to Samsung for clarification and received the following reply: “Samsung don’t speculate or comment on upcoming product launches”. This is the typical response, with most companies keen not to give anything away.

We can certainly speculate as to why it was mentioned in the app but never materialised, though. Perhaps Samsung was working on it for a while, before deciding to cancel? We may never know.

For now, you’ll have to choose between one of the Galaxy Watch 9 models, the new Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 or pick up a Galaxy Watch 8 Classic.

The next big launch in the smartwatch world will be the Google Pixel Watch 5 on 12 August, along with the Pixel 11 phones.
