Apple’s iOS 27 beta confirms iPhone Ultra

Apple has essentially just confirmed the existence of the iPhone Ultra, courtesy of its latest software release.

WWDC 26 is taking place right now over in California, offering us all a good look at Apple’s immediate software and AI plans.

It may also have just served to confirm the existence of the company’s next major hardware release. The so-called iPhone Ultra has seemingly been mentioned – or at least alluded to� – in the initial iOS 27 developer beta code.

Product designer Sam Henri Gold has taken to X to reveal some telling mentions buried within the iOS 27 code.

These include snippets such as “foldState” and “angleDegrees”, as well as the inclusion of a provision for counting the number of displays on a device. That suggests a existence of a handset with more than one display, which is capable of entering a folded state, and which can open up at various angles.

Nope. Haven’t a clue what that could be referring to.

Only joking. This is obviously the closest thing to an official confirmation of Apple’s foldable debut� that we’re likely to get ahead of its September unveiling.

It’s also worth noting that Apple used its Platforms State of the Union address to announce support for the resizing of iPhone apps, which it says will be applicable in macOS’s mirroring mode as well as on iPad.

Why might Apple be adding such an app resizing feature now? Could it be that it’s about to release a device containing two very different displays, perhaps?

Apple’s foldable debut is expected to be a lot wider than most of its rivals when in the closed formation. This means that when open, it’ll basically resemble a small iPad (not an iPad mini), complete with a true 4:3 aspect ratio.

It’s a move that Samsung is looking to pre-empt with its own Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide device, which is expected to launch on 22 June.

Things are about to heat up in the foldable space, that’s for sure.
