Three Chinese men arrested in Japan over suitcases stuffed with hermit crabs
Three Chinese nationals have been arrested in Japan after the unusual sound of rustling suitcases led to the discovery of thousands of protected hermit crabs in their possession, police confirmed on Thursday. The arrests followed a tip-off from hotel staff in Amami City, located in Japans southwestern subtropical archipelago, who became suspicious after the men asked the hotel to store their luggage, which emitted strange noises. Authorities were alerted on Tuesday, May 6, when environmental officials were contacted by the hotel. Upon the return of two of the guests, police requested to inspect their luggage and found approximately 95 kilograms (210 pounds) of spiral-shelled hermit crabs. A third man was later found to have an additional 65 kilograms of the protected creatures packed into three more suitcases. The hermit crabs belong to a group of species designated as national natural monuments in Japan, a status granted due to their cultural and scientific importance. A police spokesperson said the three men were arrested on Wednesday and that the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the animals were intended for sale, personal collection, or consumption. Local reports estimate that individual hermit crabs of this kind can fetch up to 20,000 yen (approximately $140) each on the black market.
