Oluwagbenga Abiola, vice-chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, has formally withdrawn from the upcoming council chairmanship race in support of Abdulganiyu Obasa, son of Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Abiola, who had been a prominent contender for the chairmanship ahead of the Lagos council elections scheduled for July 12, said his decision aligns with the directive of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has endorsed Abdulganiyu as its flagbearer in Agege. Speaking in an interview, Abiola emphasized his loyalty to Speaker Obasa, describing him as the architect of his political career. Let me make it clear  I will never go against my leader, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, he said. This is the man who made me. He appointed me special assistant on media when he became speaker in 2015. In 2016, I was appointed sole administrator of Agege LGA, thanks to his recommendation to the governor. That appointment made me the youngest council boss in Lagos state at the time. Abiola recounted his progression within the local government, from secretary in 2017 to vice-chairman in 2021, attributing each role to the influence and support of Obasa and the APC. Dismissing rumours of coercion, Abiola said he made the decision voluntarily, out of respect for party discipline and confidence in the leaderships judgement. Yes, I aspired.
