Lassa fever killed 127 in 4 months â?? NCDC

Lassa fever has claimed 127 lives in Nigeria between January and April 2025, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).  In a situation report released on Tuesday, the NCDC said the fatalities were recorded across 18 states, highlighting a concerning rise in cases this year. The report showed a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.8 percent, slightly higher than the 18.5 percent recorded during the same period in 2024. The disease, which is endemic in parts of Nigeria, continues to pose a significant public health challenge. In total for 2025, 18 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 93 Local Government Areas, the agency said. It added that three statesOndo, Bauchi, and Edoaccounted for 71 percent of all confirmed cases. Ondo recorded 30 percent of these cases, Bauchi 25 percent, and Edo 16 percent, while the remaining 28 percent of cases were spread across 15 other states. The NCDC noted a slight increase in new confirmed cases from 14 in epidemiological week 13 to 15 in week 14. These latest cases were reported in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, Ebonyi, and Gombe states. The agency also reported that no new healthcare worker was affected during the latest reporting week. While the number of suspected cases in 2025 has decreased compared to the same period last year, the NCDC has activated the National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Incident Management System to coordinate response activities at all levels of government and across sectors. The data also revealed that the predominant age group affected by the disease falls within the 21 to 30-year range, underscoring the vulnerability of young adults in the ongoing outbreak. The post Lassa fever killed 127 in 4 months  NCDC appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
