Strike: Nurses midwives ordered to withdraw skeletal services

National President of the National Association of Nurses and Midwives, Alhaji Abdulrafiu Adeniji, on Friday ordered its members to fully withdraw their services from public hospitals in total compliance with the ongoing strike embarked on by the Joint Health Sector Unions.


Adeniji gave this order at a press briefing in Calabar, Cross River State after the national executive council meeting of the association.

He said members of the association would resist any form of intimidation and oppression, adding that nurses and midwives were ready for a long battle with the Federal Government over the contending issues until victory was achieved.

Adeniji said the latest resolution to suspend skeletal services was informed by the refusal of key officers in the Federal Ministry of Health to attend a scheduled meeting with JOHESU on December 15.

He said, ?Arising from the obvious tactics of intimidation and brutalization of our members in demanding their legitimate right and obvious exhibit of bias against JOHESU by the Federal Ministry of Health including the refusal of key officers of the ministry to attend meeting of December 15.
?We are compelled to direct our members to suspend all forms of skeletal and concessional services in all health facilities and ensure total compliance with the strike action.

?As a matter of necessity, branch meetings should hold regularly for the enforcement of members? rights and liberties and to resist any form of brutalization, intimidation and oppression, through all legitimate means. Members should gird their loins for a long drawn battle if need be, as we will not turn back until victory is achieved.?

Adeniji called on the striking members not to listen to the ?no work?, ?no pay?, rule, saying it was designed to cow them to abandon the strike and call off the industrial action.

The national president also called on the Federal Government to urgently give health facilities some level of facelift by putting on ground the basic infrastructure in clinics and hospitals.

?That gesture would position these health institutions from being the mere consulting clinics, thereby discouraging citizens from embarking on medical or health tourism, which further drains the country ofg its lean resources,? Adeniji added
