70 percent of smartphones launching next year would have a fingerprint sensor.

The results are not at all surprising, especially because fingerprint sensors have gotten substantially cheaper in the last couple of years, even though they were originally available on high-end models exclusively.

Furthermore, with an average cost of $1 to $2 in China, fingerprint sensors have made it to the majority of Chinese smartphones, and this is one of the reasons you can now purchase a budget Android device that costs around $100, but with such security hardware on board.

Unsurprisingly, Apple is one of the top phone makers offering devices with fingerprint sensors, having 11 percent of this particular market. Samsung leads the charts with 12 percent.

But while fingerprint sensors are making their way to a growing number of phones, flagship device manufacturers are already looking into alternative solutions like facial and iris recognition.
