Galaxy S27 Ultra set for unexpected performance boost

 

The Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra could be set for a significant performance boost, but not in the way you might expect.

We’re accustomed to phones getting faster every year, and the reason is generally very simple. New and improved mobile processors from Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple and the rest are released each year like clockwork.

It seems Samsung is looking to steal a march on its rivals for the Galaxy S27 range in 2027, however.

Not only will the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon chip, but it’ll also employ UFS 5.0 storage. Samsung has just announced the new standard, which will go into mass production later this year.

WTF is UFS?

Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 is a new standard of internal storage that offers read speeds of up to 10.8Gbps and write speeds of up to 9.5Gbps. That’s more than twice the speed of the current UFS 4.1 standard.

Apparently, the main application of that speed boost will be towards the handling of on-device AI tasks, which should be noticeably snappier.

Samsung’s new standard will also see a 40% boost to power efficiency, which should have a positive effect on battery life.

Another benefit is a 16.7% smaller size than the previous standard, which should create space for components including larger batteries.

It’s worth noting that Samsung doesn’t mention any specific products that will use this new storage standard. However, it does say that it’ll be ready for “mobile, wearable and extended reality (XR) devices” in the fourth quarter of the year.

That’s just in time for the launch of its next flagship phone in January, as it happens.

Prior to this announcement we’d heard that the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra would pack in a new 200Mp camera sensor, potentially arranged into a new horizontal camera design to make space for Qi2 magnetic wireless charging.
