NSIB launches probe into vessel collision in Bonny

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has launched a full investigation into the collision between a container vessel and an oil tanker at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State, describing the incident as a Very Serious Marine Casualty.According to a statement issued by the Bureaus Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, the marine accident occurred on May 20, 2026, prompting the immediate activation of emergency response procedures. The NSIB said a specialised investigation team was deployed to Onne and Bonny on May 22 to secure evidence and begin preliminary inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision. The team boarded both vessels and carried out extensive evidence-gathering procedures, including interviews with the Masters and essential crew members. Relevant operational documents and navigational records were also secured for analysis, the statement said.Investigators also retrieved critical navigation and operational data from the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) and the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) aboard the vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso for forensic examination. The Bureau stated that, in line with international maritime protocols, Singapores Transport Safety Investigation Bureau had been formally notified because of its interest in the case. NSIB added that it was already engaging both local and international maritime stakeholders connected to the incident as part of the investigation process. The agency stressed that the probe would be conducted independently and professionally to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the collision while helping to improve maritime safety standards. It would be premature to speculate on the probable causes at this stage. The Bureau strongly urges the public and all stakeholders to refrain from speculation while investigations continue, the statement added. The Bureau also noted that if urgent safety concerns emerge during the investigation, immediate recommendations would be issued to prevent similar incidents in the future. A final investigation report is expected to be released publicly after the completion of the inquiry in accordance with national and international maritime regulations. The post NSIB launches probe into vessel collision in Bonny appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
